Where do you feel at home? For many young adults today this is a simple question with a complicated answer. As human beings our need for a sense of belonging is vital to our foundation for living a healthy life. Moving away from a culture experienced at home to a new and different culture can be difficult. The difference in values between the two may cause many people to feel as though they do not belong to either. Balancing respect for the culture and values of home life with your current environment is a difficult task. Many children and young adults who grow up in such an environment work to develop inner strength to discover their own values. These struggles may cause many to turn to isolation from the belief that no one will be accepting. Therapy can be an important place to help you become whole again and to find a safe place where you can bring different aspects of your life together. Bringing your rich experiences in therapy together will help you develop the self-esteem and confidence to live according to values which are genuinely true to you. Reaching out for support in therapy can be the beginning of a new chapter which contributes to your life becoming more whole and less fragmented. As with other work in therapy, this doesn't happen overnight and is a process which is not always easy, but is a journey that many find to be critically valuable. |
